The process of creating and revising standards can involve several factors prior to adoption. Consideration is given to the validity of the problem, research to determine best practices, contemporary advancements and any other implications specific to the development of the standard. Client involvement in this process has always been considered a critical component. In the past, most standards have been adopted based on research conducted by the Commission and staff, then posted for comment before final action.
In an effort to increase public safety agency standard development contributions, the Commission would like to recognize individuals who have appropriately researched contemporary public safety issues and submitted standard proposals that are adopted or significantly impact the content of an updated or new standard. This recognition will not require an application or nomination; rather, the Standards Review and Interpretation Committee (SRIC) will review the submission and grant the CALEA Standards Development Recognition if appropriate.
Qualifications for this Recognition:
1. Address a contemporary public safety issue(s) with a focus on risk mitigation and public safety professionalism;
2. Present the submission in a format consistent with current CALEA requirements for SRIC consideration;
3. Submission of considered contemporary literary research;
4. Submission of considered contemporary evidenced-based and/or best practices;
5. Provide the development of complimentary training curriculum(s);
6. Submit in a manner suitable for SRIC action; and
7. The submission resulted in the adoption of a new standard or significantly impacted the content of and existing standard(s)
Documentation must be submitted by completing Appendix C found in the standards manual to calea@calea.org along with relevant attachments. This recognition is an important resource to further develop CALEA Standards. Maintaining a body of contemporary standards that promote best practices is gold standard in public safety.
