Office of Professional Act. Investigator
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President (AVP), Public Safety – Chief of Police, will conduct all departmental investigation matters as directed while also evaluating any complaints received - both internal and external. Acts as CALEA back-up in the absence of the Department of Public Safety's Accreditation Specialist and will assist with all other duties as assigned.

Acts as CALEA back-up in the absence of the Department of Public Safety's Accreditation Specialist and will assist with all other duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities:
While reporting directly to the AVP, Public Safety – Chief of Police, will also have a dotted line reporting relationship to the President, and CEO and Chief Operating Officer (COO) as circumstances dictate.
Responsible for classifying and reviewing all complaints made to the Office of Professional Accountability, directing all investigations, making recommendations regarding the disposition of cases, and ensuring consistency for the proposed discipline.
Conducts audits, inspections, and special reviews of Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel and programs to detect and deter waste, fraud, abuse, and misconduct with the objective to promote integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness in DPS operations.
Conducts independent investigations (criminal or ethical) of any persons associated with the Nashville International Airport (BNA).
Evaluates the internal investigation process and provides recommendations on strategies and policies to improve complaint gathering and investigative procedures.
Investigates officer misconduct complaints.
Regularly reports to the Chief on OPA activity and issues concerning the professional standards of the department.
Conducts interviews with complainants, officers, witnesses and suspects.
Appears in court prepared to testify in criminal and civil hearings.
Research sectional case file to provide requested information to BNA's Legal Department.
Conducts surveillance.
Prepare responses for civil and criminal court subpoenas for Legal Department and/or State/Federal Attorney General.
Research department rules and regulations and criminal and civil laws.
Train new personnel on standards followed by the Office of Professional Accountability during an investigation both internally and externally.
Responds immediately to security issues.
Makes recommendations regarding the disposition of cases.
Participates in contingency planning and other issues that may impact the relationship between DPS and its stakeholders.
Acts as liaison with DPS stakeholders, business partners, and law enforcement community.
Acts as the primary back-up for the Accreditation Specialist, and assists in the accreditation process, including maintaining files and securing supporting data to meet the standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Assists in researching, analyzing, planning, and presenting of special projects.
Compiles relevant evidence and data for presentation to the Chief of Police.
Reports departmental activity and issues concerning the professional standards to leadership.
Conducts research relevant to investigations, including criminal and civil laws, department rules and regulations, and sectional case files.
Evaluates the internal investigation process and provides recommendations on strategies and policies to improve complaint gathering and investigative procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
Experience in law enforcement or as a detective, investigatory supervisor, and/or demonstrated skills in case management.
Experience conducting misconduct or other complex investigations.

Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelors degree in related field of study (i.e. Criminal Justice, Business Administration or Public Administration).
4-7 years experience at the supervisory level equivalent to a Sergeant
2-4 years experience involving criminal investigations or experience in internal affairs investigations
Preferred:
Graduate Degree (Master’s, or Doctorate of Jurisprudence)
