Accreditation & Special Events Manager
Mississippi State University Police Department is charged with providing for the safety of all the students, faculty, staff, and guests who attend class, work, live, and visit our campus, and with the security of university buildings and property. The department provides a comprehensive array of law enforcement services through a dedicated staff of 34 sworn, state commissioned police officers and more than 10 full-time support personnel. All MSU Police Officers are certified by the Mississippi Peace Officers Minimum Standards Commission and have the same authorities and must meet the same expectations as law enforcement officers in any community.
The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. The absence of specific statements of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.
1. Reporting to the university’s Chief of Police, establishes and administers protocols and processes related to accreditation and special events.
2. Develops and administers all related standards, policies and procedures pertaining to accreditation and special events and ensures compliance to such standards. This includes working with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and the Mississippi Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission to ensure compliance to law enforcement accreditation standards.
3. Participates in planning and review meetings with representatives across campus and in surrounding jurisdictions prior to special events. Provides leadership and oversight in the research, design, preparation, implementation and execution of police staffing and support for special events.
4. Responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies/procedures as they pertain to accreditation and special events security.
5. Examines maintenance of traffic plans involving the placement of barricades, cones, street closures, alternate street usage, etc. Creates maps and other visual displays of proposed deployment that may be evaluated and utilized by police command and supervisory personnel.
6. Establishes staffing needs for special events, including appropriate relief staffing; coordinates with the Patrol Captain for necessary off-duty staff when on-duty personnel are not involved in event support or to augment regular personnel where necessary.
7. Works with operational and fiscal units to establish correct accounting in terms of staff hours, equipment usage and other support resource costs for police services provided for special events.
8. Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education Required: Bachelor's degree.
Minimum Experience Required: CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) Accreditation Manager Certification - or - At least two (2) years' experience managing law enforcement accreditation process.
(Accepted substitution for bachelor's degree and two (2) years' experience is five (5) years of experience in law enforcement, security, and/or law enforcement accreditation of which three (3) years was in a supervisory capacity.)
Education & experience above the minimum.
Experience working with accreditation and/or special event planning in law enforcement at a college or university similar in size to our institution.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
1. Demonstrated work history of law enforcement security/special event planning and law enforcement accreditation process.
2. Experience managing he law enforcement accreditation process.
3. Knowledge and understanding of the requirements and resources necessary to special event security planning.
4. Demonstrated history of working in collaboration with other department officials and/or outside entities in regard to security planning.
5. Supervisory experience in a security environment.
6. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
7. Ability to troubleshoot issues related to matters of security.
8. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbally and in writing.
9. Proficient in computer and other technological applications.
