Animal Services Enforcement Director
DeKalb County, Georgia seeks highly qualified applicants for the transformational leadership position of Animal Services Enforcement Director. Per a Board of Commissioners Resolution and coordinated efforts, DeKalb County is a “No-Kill” animal/pet jurisdiction. The Director position offers a unique opportunity to further develop policies, practices, and customs to efficiently sustain public safety, while enhancing positive outcomes for humans and animals within DeKalb County.
This is a challenging position in a progressive environment requiring implementation of national best practices, as well as advanced thoughtfulness, reasonableness and prudence. The Animal Services Enforcement Director reports to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Public Safety. It directs the enforcement of DeKalb County animal ordinances and state statutes relating to animal welfare, care, and public safety.
This position is distinctly separate from and has no supervisory, subject matter authority, or responsibility for Shelter Operations. DeKalb County’s Animal Shelter Operations is contractually outsourced to a local nonprofit, LifeLine Animal Project. The relationship between the DeKalb Animal Services Enforcement Director and the LifeLine Director of Animal Services Shelter Operations is one of coordination, collaboration, and cooperation between two parallel divisions, each reporting to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Public Safety.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Animal Science, Criminal Justice, Veterinary Science or related field required; six years of progressively responsible experience working in animal control; or related field, with three years of management experience for a comparably sized organization; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license; National Animal Control Association certification (NACA) preferred.

The successful applicant must be a leader who ethically influences human behavior to achieve organizational goals that serve the public, while developing individuals, teams, and Animal Services Enforcement for future service. The ideal candidate will possess applicable managerial and business knowledge, and skills and abilities to accomplish organizational priorities and needs efficiently and effectively. The successful candidate will also have senior management experience that demonstrates strategic, results-oriented leadership in an organization of comparable complexity, scope and scale.
