Message from the Executive Director--Fee Reduction Announced for Multiple Accreditation

At the Summer CALEA Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, the Commission addressed the issue of reducing initial accreditation fees for those CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited agencies seeking Communications and/or Training Academy Accreditation. I am pleased to announce that effective immediately, a reduced fee schedule was approved by the Commission. Law Enforcement Accredited agencies that wish to enter their components into either the Public Safety Communications and/or the Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation Programs are eligible for a one time 40% reduction in the current initial administrative fees for each program.   more

Complying With a Consent Decree
Several police department in the United States are or have been under federal consent decrees to initiate reforms in their respective agencies. Police departments in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Steubenville, Ohio; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; and the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) are or were signatories to separate decrees with the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ) and supervised by federal district
courts. more

Commissioner Kamatchus Becomes NSA President  
CALEA Commissioner Ted G. Kamatchus, Sheriff of Marshall County, Iowa, was sworn in as the President of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) at its annual conference in Orlando, Florida, in June 2006.  Sheriff Kamatchus began his law enforcement career in 1976 in rural Minnesota, working in various small communities while attending Mankato State University and majoring in police science. In 1988, he was appointed Sheriff of Marshall County, Iowa, and has been successfully re-elected to that post since then.  more

CALEA’s Summer Conference was held in Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington sits in the heart of the Blue Grass Region of the state and is known worldwide not only for its horse farms and the Keeneland Race Track, but for the Gratz Park district, Union and Confederate Civil War sites, and Lexington Public Safety Museum, as well.  more

Charles Austin, Sr
With more than 30 years of service in public service, Charles P. Austin, Sr. took on the challenge of city management, becoming City Manager for Columbia, South Carolina in 2003. Since that time, he has faced and overcome many management challenges. He was appointed during a time when the internal environment needed stability and vision, and has worked diligently with Columbia City Council to establish goals for this growing capital city. Charles’ career includes many “firsts,” including being Columbia’s first African American city manager.   more

Two Chiefs Receive Bittner Award
Chief Ronald G. Ferrell, Ph.D. of the Mason (OH) Police Department and Chief Timothy D. Wallace of the Hurst (TX) Police Department were honored with the presentation of the Egon Bittner Award at the CALEA Summer Conference in Lexington, Kentucky. This award is presented to Chief Executive Officers who have commanded a CALEA Accredited agency for 15 or more continuous years. It was created to recognize these leaders for their significant contributions to the public safety profession and to CALEA. more

Communications Open Channel
Wanda McCarley, President, APCO International
In 1999, APCO convened a Staffing Crisis Task Force in response to concerns expressed by members about staffing and retention in public safety communications centers. The APCO Board of Officers recognized the importance of these issues and elevated the Task Force to Project status (Project 40 in the APCO Project series) and called it Project RETAINS – Responsive Efforts To Assure Integral Needs in Staffing. Project RETAINS was initiated in response to a widespread perception that public safety communications centers have an unusually high turnover rate.   more

CALEA TRI-ARC Excellence Award Presented
The third recipient of CALEA TRI-ARC Excellence Award is the Kansas City Police Department and the City of Kansas City, Kansas for its leadership in public safety. The 435 member department has been Law Enforcement Accredited since November 1993, and received both their Public Safety Communications Accreditation and Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation awards at the Lexington Summer Conference. more

 

Lights, Camera, Action! New Law Enforcement DVD Released
CALEA has produced a new DVD for the Law Enforcement Accreditation™ Program entitled CALEA - In Pursuit of Excellence. It can be useful in recruitment and training activities, as well as in educational efforts to inform local government and the community about CALEA’s Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. It is fast moving and visually engaging, and runs about 15 minutes in length. more

Finding Proofs of Compliance - An Alternative Method
As anyone who is starting, or has been through the CALEA Process can attest, the route to accreditation has several distinct phases. For departments that are seeking initial accreditation, the first phase of the self-assessment period requires a comprehensive appraisal of the agency’s existing policies and procedures. This phase coincides with a thorough familiarization of the particular CALEA Standards applicable to the agency.  more

EXEMPLARY PROJECT-- An Educational Program to Confront Bullying
In response to a groundswell of interest and inquiries from the public, the Peoria (AZ) Police Department developed and implemented an innovative public education program aimed at children, teachers, and parents on how to deal with bullying behavior. Called the Bully Program, it is one of the first programs of its kind in the area.  more

Dotson Heads NOBLE    

Former CALEA Commissioner Jimmie L. Dotson was installed as President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) at the 30th Annual Training Conference and Exhibition held in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 2006.  more

Certificates of Meritorious Accreditation Announced
Ten agencies were recognized during the CALEA Conference Celebration Banquet in Lexington, Kentucky, for having been CALEA Accredited for 15 or more continuous years. These agencies receive an enhanced Certificate of Meritorious Accreditation, displaying a blue “Meritorious” ribbon and an inscription proclaiming their 15 or more years of accredited status. more

CALEA FLAGSHIP AGENCY PROGRAM
Twelve agencies were recognized at the Lexington, Kentucky, Summer CALEA Conference as a CALEA Flagship Agency. The Flagship Agency Program was introduced at the 2004 Winter CALEA Conference to acknowledge the achievement and expertise of some of the most successful CALEA Accredited public safety agencies, and also to provide “flagship examples” to assist other agencies.  more

These include changes in CEO’s or accreditation managers, agency address, or changes in area codes, telephone, fax and extension numbers. Your cooperation enables us to maintain an up to date database.

Additionally, PAC officials should notify CALEA of appropriate changes.
