Message from
the Chair
Jim O'Dell
The
Commission is preparing to launch the Standards Review Task Force, whose mission
is to review and make appropriate revisions to accreditation programs’ standards
(law enforcement, public safety communications, and public safety training
academy) and related CALEA processes. Periodic review of the
standards and CALEA practices by practicing professionals is one of the
foundations that make your accreditation programs the benchmark for law
enforcement and public safety professionalism.

Service Standards in the Colorado Springs Police
Department
In today’s environment of
scarce resources and high expectations, police agencies must continually seek
ways to demonstrate accountability to their communities for public funds and
police services. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is building on
the foundation of police accreditation and our well-established community
policing philosophy to further raise the threshold of accountability to our
citizens. CALEA® Accreditation represents compliance with professional law
enforcement requirements and practices.

"Accreditation Works" presents
specific examples of how accreditation positively affects an agency or
community. These success stories often go unnoticed, so send your examples
to CALEA.

CONFERENCE REVIEW

Detroit’s Motor City
culture continues to move full speed ahead. Nearly 500 public safety officials
attended the Commission’s Annual Summer Conference that was held in Detroit,
Michigan, July 9-12, 2003. Detroit’s new downtown, featuring the architectural
history, artsy “Necklace District” and the ever-turning roulette wheels at
Detroit’s “Greek Town”, made our stay very interesting. The Commission thanks
the Michigan Police Accreditation Coalition (MIPAC), which represents
approximately 18 law enforcement agencies, and Detroit Police Department
for hosting this outstanding meeting.
