CALEA Moves to New Office
Space
On March 1st CALEA made a short move to a larger and more attractive first-floor office space in an adjacent building. The 75% increase in space provides CALEA with much needed additional offices and meeting rooms, as well as an expanded conference room, production room, kitchen, and records-storage area, with accommodation for future growth.

The Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) is a state agency in the Kentucky Justice Cabinet, located on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky, and is responsible for training law enforcement personnel across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  more

Aéroports
de Montréal’s Airport Patrol: Now A CALEA Accredited Force
On March 22, 2003 the Aéroports de Montréal’s Airport Patrol became one of the 605 law enforcement agencies accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). The Airport Patrol is the organization responsible for law enforcement and security at Montréal-Dorval (YUL) and Montréal-Mirabel (YMX) International Airports.

Your Commissioner- Jack R. Greene
Commissioner Jack R. Greene is professor of Criminal Justice and dean of the College of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University where he oversees an instructional program enrolling 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, as well as the Center for Criminal Justice Policy Research and the Institute for Race and Justice. more

Elaine O’Neal Leaves CALEA
Commissioner Elaine O’Neal left the Commission in March after serving since January 1997.  Judge O’Neal was recently appointed Chief District Court Judge for the 14th Judicial District of Durham County NC and found her new responsibilities limited her time for CALEA.  Elaine served on the SRIC Committee and review Committee C.  The CALEA family thanks her for her service and wishes her continued success.

 
Reaccreditation Files
The successful reaccreditation assessment depends on the candidate agency’s ability to verify consistent performance over a three-year period, particularly in time sensitive reports and activities. CALEA assessors must verify this performance primarily through a review of agency reaccreditation files, whether that file is slated for off-site review, compliance panel review, or on-site review. more

Two Risk Management Studies
Support Accreditation

It has been said by some law enforcement agencies that they are not interested in achieving (or maintaining) CALEA accreditation because they “can’t afford it”. These agencies might not be factoring into the cost equation the cost-benefit ratio of CALEA accreditation and their liability risk exposure. Two recent risk management studies by state league-sponsored self-insured pooling organizations indicate that accreditation significantly reduces the risk factors associated with police operations. more

Law enforcement is an unforgiving business. The expanding scope and sophistication of critical incident management requires everyone in law enforcement to employ immediate and decisive action in order to lessen the adverse effects of the incident on the community.

Exemplary Project
KENTUCKY’S TELECOMMUNICATIONS BASIC ACADEMY
A critical activity, which provides federal, state, and local law enforcement valuable information on a continual basis, is the telecommunications center. Often this slice of the infrastructure is given the least amount of attention in training and respect.

CALEA’s Annual Spring Conference held in sunny Orlando, Florida, March 19-22, 2003, attracted in excess of 1,000 attendees.   CALEA is grateful to Sheriff Kevin Beary, Orange County Sheriff’s Office for hosting this event. CALEA needs your help in maintaining an accurate database. Please notify CALEA when there are changes made in your organization that may affect CALEA. These include changes in CEO’s or accreditation managers, agency address, or changes in area codes, telephone, fax and extension numbers. Your cooperation enables us to maintain an up to date database.

Additionally, PAC officials should notify CALEA of appropriate changes.
