Case Number 33

As Director of Planning and Research, one of my responsibilities is maintaining accreditation in our agency.  For our most recent reaccreditation, employees responsible for specific functions were given the responsibility of maintaining the accreditation files specific to their duties.  (In the past, the accreditation manager was responsible for collecting reports and other documentation, and maintaining the files.)  It was during this process that our personnel realized the importance of accreditation and that it was not just a "paper chase.”  Accreditation has assisted our employees in gaining a thorough understanding of the complex intricacies when managing a high quality organization.

Accreditation has assisted the Chief of Police in accountability of his command and supervisory staff.  It has given the staff the tool to assist him in the management of the department.  Annual reports and analyses are now actually used to look at acceptable performance of officers and make any corrective adjustments.  Some prime examples are the Analyses of Use of Force and Citizen Complaints.

If we had to pick one area of the most positive affects accreditation has had on our agency, it would have to be our relationship with our community.  Our community has taken an active role in our accreditation process.  Accreditation has continuously contributed to community confidence and support.

Through the review of agency policy and procedures and goals and objectives, we have shared the opportunity to understand the guidance that accreditation standards provide.  This guidance contributes to the direction of our agency and our relationship with the community.  We cannot take any one standard and measure the effect of the action the agency took to comply with the standard.  We do know that the heightened level of confidence that accreditation brings as a whole, not only to department personnel but also to the community, truly reflects the professionalism of the Salisbury Police Department.

Ms. Sue Wales
Director of Planning and Research
