Status Report
In July 1998, CALEA’s State Programs Committee was created and directed to
"…initiate an open dialog with state accreditation groups to discuss
mutually beneficial relationships with CALEA..." After a series of meetings
with representatives from six state accreditation organizations, the Committee
made its initial report to the Commission in March 1999.

The U.S. Marshals Service - First Major Federal Law Enforcement Agency to Be
Accredited
John W. Marshall was sworn in as the new director of the U.S. Marshals
Service in a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Justice, November 17, 1999. Mr.
Marshall has a solid background in law enforcement. more

The CALEA staff has noticed that agencies are still having problems
interpreting Chapter 72, Holding Facility. Since the introduction of the
3rd and 4th Editions of the Standards Manual, very little
has changed in the interpretation of this standard. more
Gainer
Recognized

Former Commissioner Terrance W. Gainer was presented with an appreciation
award from CALEA’s Executive Director, Sylvester Daughtry, Jr., for the
services he performed as a Commissioner from 1997 to 1999.

Two more communications agencies, The
Rock County (WI) 911 Communications
Center and the Rhode Island E-911 Uniform Emergency Telephone System had
successful on-sites in April and will be reviewed by the Commission for
accreditation in Schaumburg, IL. more

CALEA Commissioner James F. Wright has been the Deputy City Manager for the
City of Hartford, CT, since April 1999. Born in Salisbury, NC, Jim was an active
member of the high school choir, class president in 1963, and an honor student
who received a college scholarship to Johnson C. Smith University. more

Department
Nine year old Amber Hagerman was riding her bike in broad daylight on the
parking lot of an abandoned grocery store on January 13, 1996, when she was
pulled from her bike and placed, kicking and screaming, into a pick-up by a
suspect who is still unidentified. There was only one known witness to the
offense.

Assessor- Patrick
Shanahan
Chief Patrick "Tom" Shanahan of the 900 member CALEA accredited
Anne Arundel County (MD) Police Department is recognized as a "Top
Assessor." Tom took assessor retraining and team leader training in
Atlanta, GA, in November and received 100% on the assessor test. Tom states,
"I thoroughly enjoyed the assessor and team leader training held in
Atlanta. The test was definitely thought-provoking and challenging, and should
add great credibility to the accreditation process." more
