issues column will address reaccreditation file maintenance. Transition policies
for the 3rd and 4th edition, 3-year cycles vs. 5-year cycles, and
other new procedures having an impact on the manner in which
accreditation files should be prepared. more
CALEA's Summer Conference Wrap up-- CALEA with a French Flavour! more
SRIC Update
The SRIC met at the Montreal, Canada
meeting and took action on one agenda item: Based on the recommendation of the SRIC group
from the State Accreditation Task Force (SATF), the list of "core" standards for
use in the state accreditation alliance was preliminarily approved, subject to field
staffing. Background on this issue and copies of the core standards list are available on
the CALEA Website at (clients only section). Copies have also been mailed to accreditation
networks/coalitions, with a request for comments by September 30, 1999, (for
the next meeting of the task force), or November 3,1999, to reach the SRIC at its next
meeting.
Qualitative On-sites Considered
On September 24th
and 25th representatives from the on-site assessment teams and the agencies
involved in the four September 1998 innovative "qualitative on-site assessments"
(QA) met with the CALEA staff in Fairfax, VA. more

County (GA) has recently been sworn as the new President of the Georgia Sheriff's
Association. (Sheriff Bittick, the third generation in his family to hold the Sheriff's
Office, has served as the chief law enforcement officer of Monroe County for the past 17

Lakewood (CO) Police Dept.
It has become clear that police personnel respond on too many occasions
to the same residence on reports of domestic violence. The "cycle of violence"
is obviously present in many of these homes. more
Assessor Note
Assessors who have not had
retraining since 1996 must take a refresher course and pass a written test in Atlanta
to be considered for future use. more

Training Committee
The CALEA Training Committee has the responsibility to approve and monitor training at
CALEA meetings. The committee consist of eight members, four of whom are appointed
annually. Persons interested in being appointed to the committee for the year 2000 should
contact Ted LeMay, CALEA's training coordinator, at 1-800-368-3757, extension 22 for more
information.

Major Stan Crowder, Ph.D. of the Marietta, GA (pictured
with his father, Billy) received the Garde Nationale Trophy at the 121st National Guard
Association of the United States Conference on September 5th in Atlanta. more
Vest Saves Deputy
Arapahoe County (CO) Senior Deputy
Sheriff Cernich was wounded by a gunshot on a traffic contact at 1:58 am Monday, July 12,
1999. He observed the car driving erratically and while approaching the driver noticed
another male occupant in the right rear of the car. A bullet fired from one of the two
suspects in the car struck the deputy in the upper right shoulder. more
