Sylvester Daughtry, Jr. was appointed as the Executive Director of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) on January 1, 1999. He is an experienced manager and leader in the law enforcement profession, serving for eleven years as Chief of Police for the 600-member Greensboro (NC) Police Department before retiring in January 1998. He dedicated 29 years to law enforcement with Greensboro, where he began as a patrol officer and was promoted through each successive rank.

Named to the CALEA Commission in 1990, Mr. Daughtry was elected Chair of the Commission by his colleagues in 1996. During his tenure as Chairman, he provided his unique brand of wisdom and leadership to the improvement of law enforcement and in guiding the Commission through some of its most difficult years, to the position of prominence it enjoys today.

Mr. Daughtry earned a Bachelor's Degree in history from North Carolina A&T State University. He is also a graduate of the 145th session of the FBI National Academy, and the 18th session of the FBI National Executive Institute. He is a life member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), having served as President from 1993-94. Other memberships in professional associations include Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).

Mr. Daughtry is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, most noteworthy being the North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Association's Achievement and excellence in law enforcement, and the William French Smith Award presented by the United States Attorney General for outstanding contribution to cooperative law enforcement.
