CASE #10 (Issue 66: February 1998)Submitted by William L. Tucker, Director and Daniel Flores, Accreditation Manager Georgetown University, Department of Public Safety (Washington, DC)
The types of crime occurring on university property have changed as well. Thefts are now the predominant crime, with bicycle and computer theft leading the numbers. In the last quarter, we had one simple assault offense, which was the only crime of violence reported. The recruit training program was also improved to meet CALEA standards. Our in-service training program, also established to meet the standards, is an ongoing program which motivates employees to do their job as efficiently as possible. One of the most important results of being accredited has been the improvement in the relationship between the DPS staff and the university community. The university community is proud of the department's accreditation and makes it known in their recruitment of new students. The leadership of the Department of Public Safety has utilized the CALEA standards to improve the quality of service provided, which has improved the safety of the campus.
